The Band Program

The Willoughby Public School Band program is for children from Years 3-6. It aims to contribute to each student’s development musically, socially and personally.

Our musical aims are to give all students, regardless of their previous musical experience, the opportunity:

  • to play a musical instrument
  • to develop an appreciation and understanding of a wide range of musical styles
  • to develop aural and expressive skills
  • to foster a love of music

Playing in a band can contribute to a student’s development of team and community spirit, self-esteem, social interaction, self-discipline and responsibility.

Our program is part of our P&C, and is parent-organised with the support of the school. Three hugely talented professional conductors are employed by the band program. We are extremely lucky to have such passionate and highly talented conductors guiding our students into the world of music and concert bands.

OUR MUSIC PROGRAM

Opportunities exist for children to play flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, French horn, baritone horn, keyboard, bass guitar and percussion.

Children are invited to join our band program from Year 3. All band members are required to attend music tutorials (lessons) to learn their instrument, as well as attend band rehearsals each week.

We structure our program into 4 separate bands:

  • TRAINING BAND

Training Band is for children in their first year of playing an instrument. It mainly comprises students from Year 3, with some Year 4 students.  Older children who do not have any prior musical experience can also join this band.

The Training Band is conducted by Anthony Marsden.  Mr Marsden is supported by assistant conductor Mr David Brinsmead.  Rehearsals are on Wednesday mornings in the School hall.

  • INTERMEDIATE BAND

Intermediate Band is for children in their second year of playing their instrument.

The Intermediate Band is conducted by Anthony Marsden and David Brinsmead, supported by assistant conductor Cassie Parke.  Rehearsals are on Tuesday and Friday mornings in the School hall.

  • PERFORMING BAND

Performing Band is WPS’s senior band. The children in this band have been playing their instruments for 3 years or more.

The Performing Band is conducted by Mr David Scarborough and rehearsals run Monday and Thursday mornings in the School hall.

  • String Ensemble

The String Ensemble is a pilot initiative for 2023, and is for children in Years 1-6 who have at least one year of string instrument playing and lessons, The Ensemble is conducted by Ms Giulia Tesoriero.
